The Faculty of Engineering at Koya University has become an effective academic foundation not only between universities in the Kurdistan region and Iraq, but its name and impact has branched to become prominent among neighbouring countries and even over the world. This observed superiority of the Faculty refers to many reasons, such as the specialty of the departments in the faculty and the scientific activities that have been carried out in the last few years.
The type of the departments has effective impact on the fast integration with the international universities and companies, such as Petroleum, Chemical and Geotechnical. Besides these departments have strong integration together, they are not existed altogether in the other universities in Iraq.
The local and international meetings that have been carried in the Faculty of Engineering have had a great influence on introducing the Faculty to the other universities. For example, for the first time in the Kurdistan region, from 3 to 6 December 2012, the Faculty of Engineering held the first international conference on petroleum and mineral resources, in collaboration with the Wessex Institute of Technology in UK. Professors and specialists in the industrial companies participated in different countries such as, Australia, UK, Sweden, Norway, Canada, etc. Following the success of the conference, Koya University council has decided to reconvene the Meeting between 21 and 23 October 2014, also in Koya. On the other hand, the Faculty of Engineering has engaged with a program that supervised by UNESCO, office of Iraq in Amman, about the Self-Assessment efforts, which lead to gaining accreditation.
The Faculty of Engineering has established a project called Koya-Record, which focus on recognizing the available resources in Koya district and diagnosing its requirements; consequently tailoring (nominating) scientific researches for the students and academic staff in the faculty. This project has been enlarged noticeably, as through the outcome researches mentioned from Koya-Record project, the First International Symposium on Urban Development carried out between 16 and 17 December 2013 in the Faculty of Engineering. Participants were from different countries and they presented their researches successfully. Hopefully, the Conference finished under the control of the faculty successfully.
